Quartier Grillweg
Austria-wide, open urbanistic competition
Graz, Austria
2014
The exposed location on the southern edge of the city and the distinctive appearance of the extraordinarily high residential districts of Graz give the planning area an urban development in the heterogeneous peripheral sprawl. However, the potential for urban development has yet to be successfully exploited. The approaches from the 60s and 70s for a highly residential development (La Defense) have remained in the way.
Concept:
> Creation of a visible urban structure for housing through appropriate urban development measures
> Dynamic elevation at Kärntnerstraße, quiet courtyard-like living quarters behind it
> Feasibility in 4 equivalent sections
> Soundproofing through each building itself: closed side to the near, open side to the distant sound source
> Ventilation in N-S and E-W direction
> Urban plaza as a meeting place, residential green spaces, public and semi-public transit
